Travel mobility scooters are compact, lightweight mobility aids designed specifically for easy transport, public transit, and holiday travel. They fall into two primary categories. folding scooters, which collapse into a single unit.

Splitting (or boot) scooters, which disassemble into multiple lightweight sections for easier lifting into a vehicle.

Key Categories of Travel Scooters

  • Folding Mobility Scooters: These units collapse manually or automatically at the touch of a button. They stay as one piece, requiring you to lift the full frame weight (typically 13kg to 20kg+) all at once.
  • Splitting / Car Boot Scooters: These scooters break down into 4 to 6 separate components. (battery, seat, motor, and chassis). This design is perfect if you cannot lift a single heavy frame, as the heaviest single piece is often under 15kg.

Pavement Scooters

Pavement mobility scooters—legally classified as Class 2 invalid carriages in the UK—are medium-sized mobility vehicles specifically designed to be driven exclusively on pavements, footpaths, and pedestrian areas. They offer a practical balance of day-long battery range, advanced comfort features, and structural stability without the legal complexity of large road scooters.

Road Able Scooters

Road-legal mobility scooters (known legally as Class 3 invalid carriages) are allowed on UK public roads if they have a maximum speed of 8 mph and are formally registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). You do not need a driving licence, road tax, or an MOT to operate one, but you must be at least 14 years old.
